When starting direct on-line, an AC Induction motor can draw 6-9 times normal full load current. This can trigger peak demand penalties from the utility company, increasing the tariff for the entire billing period. It can also translate to an up to 300% increase in shock load transferred to the mechanical transmission systems resulting in premature mechanical failure and the associated repair or replacement costs. Star Delta starting offers only very modest improvements.
